The brown thornbill , one of Australia ’s midget bird , is 40 meter smaller than its predatory animal :   the pied currawong . Should be easy pick , right ? Not exactly .   The humble - looking doll is able-bodied to outfox the predator by mime the admonition calls of grown , more terrifying birds . The study , bring out in the journalProceedings of the Royal Society B , is the first to show that outspoken mimicry can be used by birds to frighten predators .

The currawong usually preys on the thornbill ’s nest and in a fight , the currawong would well win . Currawongs are vigilant birds that   hear out for any war hawk alarm clock calls — particularly from their predator , the brown goshawk — to stay alert for any incoming danger . The thornbill   cleverly exploits this by mimicking the alarm calls of other birds , creating the impression of a loom hawk attack . While the currawong is perturb by the thornbill ’s deceit , the offspring   in the nest are fall in a chance to escape .

" It ’s not superbly accurate mimicry , but it ’s enough to dissipate the marauder , " says Dr. Branislav Igic of the   Australian National University , who carried out the study , in astatement .   " I am amazed that such a tiny shuttle can mime so many coinage , some much big than itself . It ’s very cunning . ”

Researchers actually came across the thornbill ’ apery by accident . They were n’t sure why they kept find out the warning calls of a variety of birds when contemplate the dame ’ reaction to a stuffed hooter .

" I was puzzled because I could learn the alarum birdsong of robins , honeyeaters and rosellas , but I could n’t see any , " Professor Robert Magrath , who led the inquiry group , said in a statement .   " I soon realized that the brown thornbill was mime the other specie , and Branislav later discovered that they sometimes lie in about the type of predator present when represent their nest . "

To take the effect of the mimicry , investigator filled fake thornbill nests with wimp pieces and keep how currawongs reacted to different calls . The currawongs became   distracted for 16 seconds when the thornbill ’s trick calls were heard . Researchers suggest this would be enough time for the minor to take flight . When the currawongs discover the thornbill ’s own call , it was perturb for only half a minute .
