The only manner to save the Great Barrier Reef   is to override climate change , according to a late study published inNature . This might seem like the obvious resolution , as   the warming ocean cause the   corals to discolourise , but it is animportant fact to settle . Now the   question remains : Is there time to save it ?

It waspreviously suggestedthat while mood modification did pose a major scourge to the Rand , this could be mitigated by cleaning up the H2O and preclude overfishing . The theory was that contamination and fishing emphasize the coral to such a degree that when the body of water begin to warm , it ’s much more likely the reef will die when   a bleaching event occurs . It seems , however , that this thought has finally been put to rest .

By study the three major bleaching events that have occurred on the Great Barrier Reef over the last 20 years , the researchers found that both the temperature of the sea surface and the duration at which it rest above average were the master agents force back the bleaching and , in some cases , eventual death of the coral .

This lift significant questions about how the reef is now managed . Australia has spent a lot of prison term and money on improving the health of the Witwatersrand by , for model , keep farming overspill from the coast into the shallow seas off Queensland , as well as protecting large parts of it from fishing . As a result , it is considered one of the best managed reef in the humanity . But this may all mean nothing if , as this recent study suggests , the literal threat is actually fall from man - made climate modification .

During the 2016 bleaching event , for example , the corals in the northernmost part of the reef were the hardest hit . To many , this was a serious worry considering that these parts are the least approachable and so least chaffer , making them some of the most pristine country along the intact reef . But it is precisely because they are so far north that they were so bad touched . This is because the water there are on average warmer and so any rise in sea surface temperature touch on them far worsened than those further Confederate States of America . It now looks   likely , however , that even the southern reef will get bump off , as the reef is on the brink of an unprecedentedsecond bleaching in two year .

Yet it is not only the red coral and all the thou of speciesthat will suffer . The gravid Barrier Reef is think to endorse about 70,000 job and land in an stupefying $ 7 billion of tourist revenue . If the reefs conk out , many will suffer .

regrettably , the Australian regime is n’t exactly known for its strident stance against mood change . Despite the fact that the Rand sit off the coast of Queensland , the state has of late okay the establishment of Australia ’s largest coal mine , and with most of the fossil fuel being shipped to China , theexpansion of a coal portwill be built   near   the reef itself .

The point of the study is that   the Witwatersrand can be save . If greenhouse throttle emissions are dramatically slashed and renewables cover , global temperature can be slow and , in time , stabilize . This would keep the oceans from warm too much , and hopefully the coral could then have fourth dimension to adapt . However , it   requires the political will to do so .
