THE CROWN Season 6 First Look at Prince William & Kate Middleton

The Crownis bowing out with one final season.

While thefifth seasonwas originally intended to be the show’s last, Netflix announced thatthe series would be extended to season 6in 2020.

“As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” creator Peter Morgan previously said in a statement.

With the additional season,most stars from season 5are expected to reprise their roles, including Imelda Staunton asQueen ElizabethII, but there will also be a few new additions joining the cast.

Mostcast members from season 5are expected to return, including Staunton asQueen ElizabethII, Jonathan Pryce asPrince Philip, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana and Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles.

In a press release from Netflix in October 2023, they confirmed that Salim Daw (Mohamed Al Fayed) and Khalid Abdalla (Dodi Fayed) will also reprise their roles from season 5.

While season 5 largely focused on the end ofPrince Charlesand Princess Diana’s marriage,the plot of the final seasonwill have a larger focus on William and Harry than in previous seasons.

Furthermore, it’s speculated that with Kate’s casting, the show will depict the beginning of her romance withPrince Williamduring their time together at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Photos from set showing Debicki wearing an outfit reminiscent of what she wore the day before she died in 1997 indicate that the series will alsoshowcase Diana’s final days. That being said, Netflix confirmed to PEOPLE that the moment of impact of Diana’s Paris car crash will be excluded from the series.

On Sept. 4, 2023,Netflix teasedthat this season will also document Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles' wedding, which took place in 2005 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

The official synopsis for the final season reads: “A relationship blossoms between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before a fateful car journey has devastating consequences.”

The synopsis continues: “Prince William tries to integrate back into life at Eton in the wake of his mother’s death as the monarchy has to ride the wave of public opinion. As she reaches her Golden Jubilee, the Queen reflects on the future of the monarchy with the marriage of Charles and Camilla and the beginnings of a new Royal fairytale in William and Kate.”

The time period for season 6 will reportedly cover the late ’90s and early 2000s, likely starting with Princess Diana’s death in 1997. It will also seemingly cover 2001, whenPrince William and Kate Middleton started datingat St. Andrews, and 2005, when Charles and Camilla got married.

The sixth season began filming in September 2022 butproduction was briefly suspendedfollowingthe death of Queen Elizabeth IIon Sept. 8.

“The Crown is a love letter to [the Queen] and I’ve nothing to add for now, just silence and respect,” Morgan wrote in a statement toDeadline.

A few days later,filming resumed in Spainas Debicki was seen on set recreating Princess Diana’s trip to Bosnia in 1997.

In March 2023,the show filmed scenes at the University of St. Andrewsin Scotland, where the future Prince and Princess of Wales met as college students.
