Though few in the West likely know its name , the Bengal Famine was one of the bully massacre of World War II — and it was n’t even triggered by India ’s enemies . It was brought on by British policies that put the lives of soldiers over Indian civilian and it killed an estimated3 million people . By the time the dearth was over , it vote down more citizen of the British Empire than the Axis ever would .
Even before the war , the masses of Bengal , India had already been struggling with a small food for thought supply and a skyrocket population . By 1930 , the area had theleast alimentary dieting in the world , and the banging of tropical storm was n’t making it any better .

But the war made things far regretful . spirit in Bengal became a horror show after Japan invaded Burma . Burmese refugees fled into India for tax shelter , and Japanese bombardment maraud followed on their heels . theatre were destroyed , the population grew , and what little food the people of Bengal had was load even further .
So , they called their colonial lord in Britain for service — but they only made it worse . First , they move the regular army out to Bengal , on the easterly side of India , to defend the border . But these soldiers had to be fed — and the British government ordered that the army get priority nutrient distribution . Food went to the soldiers , and civilians were left to starve .
Then , the British started a scorched - earth projection , destroy nutrient supplies and rapture in Bengal and even confiscating civilians boats out of fear that the Japanese might steal these thing from them .

The other province of India , in a panic , started refusing to trade with each other . solid food shipments to Bengal stopped and the the great unwashed of Eastern India were left with no mode to get aid from their countryman .
Without enough food to feed everybody , the monetary value of rice skyrocketed . People starved on the street , and diseases like epidemic cholera , malaria , smallpox , and dysentery devastate their malnourished bodies .
The history that come out of the Bengal famine are horrific . One witnessdescribed seeing child , ram to despair from starvation , " pick and eating undigested grains out of a mendicant ' diarrheal discharge . " Another saw a serviceman pass stagnant after getting slapped for steal food . " In those days,“the witnesssaid , " everyone was so weak a slap could toss off you . "

By the end , so many go bad that no one could keep count of the dead . By some accounts , it was 1.5 million , by others , 3 million . But no matter which number you believe , more citizen of the British Empire died in the Bengal Famine than in all of World War II combined .
