In astatementreleased Monday, Biden, 80, said that at least ten Americans, “many of whom made a second home in Israel,” were killed after Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a surprise attack in Israel.

Biden noted that he had directed his team to work with the Israeli government on the “hostage crisis." He added that the U.S. government was both “sharing intelligence” with Israel and providing experts to “consult with and advise” on “hostage recovery efforts.”

Biden continued that in light of the recent attacks, police departments have stepped up security around Jewish centers in cities across the U.S. and that they are “closely monitoring” for any “domestic threats” in connection with the attacks in Israel.

“This administration must also make clear that harming any American will really result in the wrath of the United States,” McCarthy said, perABC News. “We cannot repeat what happened in Afghanistan. It must be clear that we do not negotiate with terrorists and no American will be left behind.”

The IDF also reported that more than 3,200 rockets had been fired on Israel from Gaza. In retaliation, Israeli defense forces had struck 653 Hamas targets, per the report.

This prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to say that the country is “at war,” according toCNN. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant also announced “acomplete siege on Gaza,” blockading the Palestine-controlled area from amenities like electricity, food, water and gas.
