When we establish out about ViewSonic ’s $ 170 tablet that runs Android ’s latest ( and unquestionably great ) OS , we weremore than just a short skeptical . We want to believe , but we ’ve been hurt before . After some hand - on clock time , I can confirm that our numb - inside hearts were deadened - on .

The 7 - column inch tablet is faint and is very well-heeled to hold . It ’s not designed to be an iPad competitor , but anAmazon Kindle Firecompetitor . Indeed , I love that they ’re aiming for that damage - full point . The thing is , Amazon in reality lose a little money on each Kindle Fire they sellso they can get people buy more books / movies / euphony / apps , and the nice computer hardware is how they entice more hoi polloi into their ecosystem . ViewSonic does n’t have an ecosystem , per se , which is why they clearly skimp on ironware to get it this inexpensive .

The most glaringly regretful thing about it is the screen ( pun not intended , but enjoyed ) . It had the worst viewing angles I ’ve ever seen on a tablet . Pixilation was a trouble , and colors were flat , dull , and murky . The streamer feature here ( apart from the price ) isAndroid 4.0 , Ice Cream Sandwich . alas ICS is almost all unrecognizable . Part of this was due to the awful screen , and part was due to the fact that it did n’t work well at all . It prompt me of a tablet running Gingerbread ( Android 2.3 ) , whichisn’t a pleasant experience to arouse . Things would skip , apps would go down , and oh yeah , there were like no apps on this affair at all , which made it rather difficult to see what it could do . A word of advice for you , ViewSonic : put some apps on your thing before display it for all the human beings so it does n’t look like an elephant graveyard when it ’s turned on . There ’s this biz call Angry Birds , for case . mass seem to enjoy it .

functioning was a motley bag . At times it seemed to be fast enough , and then it would falter , fall down , go boom . While we do n’t have an prescribed Book regarding how much RAM this thing has , I ’m going to go ahead and bet “ not enough to do any real multitasking ” .

The caveat in all this is that they said this is not last software program . It may not even be the last hardware . They ’re likely go to put their own skin on top of it and give it a serious makeover , which , y’know , do n’t do that to Ice Cream Sandwich ! So , yes , there is likely for it to get better and when it is ready to be free I will be frantic to give it a real test . In the meantime , why show something off at the world ’s biggest electronics show that ’s intelligibly so far from being ready ? For now , if you want a inexpensive Android pad of paper , spend the extra $ 30 and get the Kindle Fire — with its infinitely better everything — then cut it and put straight up Android on there . Your eyes and brain will thank you .
