As a closing curtain , “ To redeem a Man ’s Soul ” is lacking in the common giant activeness setpieces . But it more than make up for that in the amount of aroused catastrophe pile on everyone .

The immense majority of “ To redeem a Man ’s Soul ” is about what happen when Jamie was leave alone with Jack Randall and how Jamie has reacted to it . In the last episode , we saw Jamie physically tortured . In the finale , Jamie is n’t just raped by Randall , Randall wants nothing less than to break Jamie ’s look entirely , complete with Jamie admitting that he ’s won .
The episode begins with Black Jack leaving Jamie , only to be tramp down by the herd of oxen the Scots are using as a diversion as they make unnecessary Jamie . Jack gets tread down by the cows , in something so richly deserved and attend to as a nice memory to hold on to as the rest of the episode unfolds .
When they delirious Jamie is brought to Claire , he lather out against her , seeing Jack in her topographic point . At first , we might opine that ’s just a variety of hectic response . But , as everything spread , it turns out it ’s more than that .
We knew from the last episode that the plenty was Jamie ’s body in interchange for Claire ’s safety equipment . And the show does not shy away from showing Jamie ’s rapine by Jack . In a mode that is so deeply horrible to watch that Outlander completely refute any attempt to label it as a guilty pleasure .
The strong-arm rape is n’t even the big thing to happen , though . Jack is fascinated by the link Jamie has to Claire . He could n’t disclose Jamie before , but now he check Claire as Jamie ’s helplessness . From the beginning of the encounter , when he monish Jamie that his men can recapture her at any fourth dimension , to the end , when he makes Jamie pretend that he is Claire .
If it were just physical dominance Jack was looking for , the beatings he ’s administered and the first rape of the evening would have done it . Of course that ’s not enough . Because he take a firm stand that Jamie take on that he ’s turn a loss , that he ’s Jack ’s , and that he discharge any title to Claire . Jamie brands himself with Jack ’s seal . Jack offer relief from the pain — through lilac oil — to make Jamie put in further . When Jack touch on Jamie saying “ These are Claire ’s hands , ” it is impossible not to funk and shudder .
It ’s to this show ’s credit that this is n’t sensationalized or romanticise in any way . It ’s horrible , it ’s presented as horrible , and Jamie does not get over it . It was n’t something that I ’d chose to look on again , and we can always contend whether or not rape need to be a plot decimal point , but Outlander did seem to try very hard to avoid the pitfalls that media often devolve into when dealing with this emergence .
Jamie spends the time he ’s being healed squinch out from Claire and confrontational with everyone else . He is self-destructive — which the show only spells out in English more than midway through the installment , nice return to unsubtitled Gaelic for this show , and a good fourth dimension for it — and Claire pull a brutal unburdening of Jamie using the lavender oil as a gun trigger .
Jamie make clear that its the betrayal of Claire by lease Jack utilise her memory and using pain backup to make him thankful for the last rape that is the bitterest lozenge . That , after all , Jack did manage to make him submit .
Jamie ’s not better after all this , but he is healing . He has Jack ’s brand foreshorten from him and burned . And he jazz he has Claire ’s support no matter what .
Claire and Jamie are fly to France where , hopefully , they ’ll be safe . And Claire resolve that , to Scheol with paradoxes and clock time change of location , if she ’s here it ’s for a reason . She becomes a full convert to Geillis ’ mind that they can change things . For Claire , that mean using her future knowledge to prevent the Jacobites and Scotland from being crush the way of life her account books tell it . So she and Jamie have a cause to follow next time of year in France . And a baby , since Claire is meaning .
In some ways , the joking goodbyes Claire exchanges with the member of the Clan MacKenzie she ’s grown closely to seem jarring compared to all the heavy emotion we ’d been dealing with just seconds before . But I actually appreciated admonisher that not everything in the reality of this show is as bare as all that .
Outlander has outperformed expectation in every way since it premier last year . It seems fitting that it ended like this , with a focusing on Jamie , Claire , and Randall — the three pillars of the season . As much as Geillis and Dougal and Colum and everyone else were important and wonderful , it really has always been about those three . Well see if that persists into next season , with the Frasers presumptively out of Jack ’s compass and Claire pregnant .
