Over on Grossman ’s own blog , he praised the pilot script by Miller and Stentz , for being edgy and fantastically funny , and added that the playscript hit the earth run , with “ this dense , intense closed book that take in you decently in . ” But Grossman managed to partake in a few more detail with us . Here ’s what we know about The Magicians :
We start in the middle . If you ’ve read the Koran , you ’ll know they begin with Quentin as a new man , going to Brakebills for the first meter . But the goggle box hand starts much later .
In fact , the book starts at the end of the first playscript , with Quentin going back to Earth and set out a boring office caper . And then the story moves forrard from there , establish us events in the mystic land of Fillory . The anchoring point of the series , at least in the first episode is , the “ now ” of Quentin living in New York . ( We do see Quentin going to Brakebills as an important piece of music in the sequence , but there are no flashback as such . An earlier version of this clause said there were actually a routine of flashbacks . )
We assemble everybody . The pilot playscript introduce all the major characters from both books . That means we expend time with Alice , Poppy and Julia , among others . And we get a good look at Julia ’s back , treat with tattoos .
There is a mass of magical spell - cast . We get to see a lot of thaumaturgy getting worked , both big and lowly , and it sounds as though there ’s a bonny bit of talk about the mechanism of cast a tour .
It covers a lot of locations . Just in the pilot , we visit Los Angeles , New York , Brakebills , Fillory , the South of France , and Venice . And if you ’ve record the books , you know that have in mind we cover a lot of ground story - wise as well .
It ’s curious and real . Grossman describes the dialogue as “ crackly ” and “ Whedonesque . ” And there are ton and scads of drinking and sex , just like in the playscript — Elliot , in particular , is never go steady without a boozing in his hand . We get to see our debauched trick - user “ living the modus vivendi . ”
Clocks are a subject . There are a gross ton of alfileria and clockwork imaging in the pilot . It ’s a “ visual leitmotiv , ” aver Grossman . And the Watcherwoman ’s watch play a function in the archetype .
Oh , and the playscript calls for “ Asleep ” by the Smiths to be playing in the background , which is a nice atmospheric hint — if Fox can in reality reset the rights to utilise it .
