With the release of Fast X , we call up it ’s last prescribed : theFast and Furious franchiseended with the death of Paul Walker . Walker ’s untimely passinggave 2015 ’s Furious 7 a sonorousness thattook the serial to a novel level , really solidifying the notion that folk , not legal action , is what makes this mega blockbuster elevator car franchise so popular .
In the films that pursue , the one - two slug that had been at the heart of every single Fast movie before it was go . The next looping , The Fate of the Furious , suffered for it , but at least it tried something novel by ready franchise hero Dominic Toretto ( Vin Diesel ) the villain . In 2021,F9 got around itby acquaint Dom ’s comrade Jakob ( John Cena ) , who provided a newfangled plait on that back - and - forth , tit - for - tat free energy the series was build on . But now , with Fast X , that brotherly comradery and reciprocal regard are off the board , and so too with them are all the emotions that made the franchise so special . Fast X does have a worthy rival for Dom though , and , surprisal surprise , he ’s the best part of the movie by far . It ’s Dante , take on by Jason Momoa , and Fast X begins with a little retcon flashback into the world of 2011 ’s Fast Five , where we see that the villain of that film , Hernan Reyes ( Joaquim de Almeida ) , had a son named Dante who would have inherit all the wealth of his father — if only Dom and his team had n’t steal it . And so , we learn that Dante has spend the past ten studying Dom to not only be able to emulate him , but also to always be a few steps ahead of him . Dante is a joyous , screaming , sociopathic character , mostly because Momoa plays him with a sonorousness and cognisance that ’s deserving the price of admission on his own . Literally , Momoa could be put up for an Oscar for this role and we would n’t be mad . He ’s the anti - Dom and anytime he ’s on screen , all you desire is for him not to leave .

Now , if Dante was Dom ’s Quaker , that core relationship that drives the debauched franchise would be entire . Because make no fault , Dante challenge Dom . But Dante is the villain , full period , and so the movie is still drive , pun intend , by Dom ’s decisions . And Dom , on his own , with no one to take exception him , just is n’t very interesting .
So where are all the other people who do challenge him ? That family from the previous nine cinema ? Well , after an avowedly solid , entertaining first human action that has all the elements of a great Fast flick ( family barbeque , monolithic set piece sport the entire cast in one place , working together ) , Dante ’s plan is put into military action . To defeat Dom , Dante decides to separate him from all his friends and family and the film does just that . One tale splinters into about six as Letty ( Michelle Rodriguez ) rifle one way ; Tej ( Ludacris ) , Roman ( Tyrese Gibson ) , Ramsey ( Nathalie Emmanuel ) , and Han ( Sung Kang ) go another , Dom is by himself , and later a few other stories observe Cypher ( Charlize Theron ) , Jakob , and Tess ( franchise newcomer Brie Larson ) are added in .

Beyond that though , all the other tan are stunt , ho-hum , and loosely relate with lines like “ We ’ll meet Dom at the rendezvous , ” as we clear watch Dom have zero interest in actually extend toward any rendezvous .

Director Louis Leterrier ( Now You See Me , The Incredible Hulk ) , who wasbrought onto the production after the departure of Justin Lin , does his best to keep the audience reminded of all of the different storyline . But with so many characters in so many places , we sometimes get like two minutes of them talking , only to cut away for another 20 - 30 minutes . Often those tantrum have some military action to remind you this is a dissolute movie , but it ’s usually just some hand - to - hand combat or pot of shootout , which all feels generic in a enfranchisement that has been anything but .
Along the way , characters in Fast X constantly make some of the most unexplainable , dumb decisions ever . Now , look . I know this is libertine and the Furious . “ Dumb ” is the brand . Flying cars , superhero jumps , I’m fine with all of that . But when characters remain in places where they can be easy place , are saved by random characters showing up out of nowhere , or say they ’re going to do something only to go miss from the rest of the film , a sense of disjointedness and apathy towards the narration intensifies . This is most evident in a view have a very well - known renown cameo and a abbreviated drug - stimulate hallucination , neither of which does anything to the motion picture except slow down it down . Then , on top of all of that , at the oddment you ’re remind that “ Oh right , this is part one of two , ” and ostensibly every undivided storyline is left dangling .
It ’s not all for naught though . As we said , Momoa brings such unbelievable charisma and get-up-and-go to the enfranchisement , you take off cheer for him and his freaky plans to work . Plus , the first major action set piece in Rome , as well as the final one in Belgium , are fantabulous . The problem with them is , for the first time in the franchise , you get the sense that the movie is not even trying to top the previous one . Which , on the one hand , makes sense . F9 literally took the characters into place . How do you top that ? Well , this is Fast and Furious . Ingenuity is part of the limited sauce , and that the two best action scene in the movie feel like they could have been done four moving-picture show ago does n’t help .

After a promising start , Fast X devolves into a jumbled , uneven , nonsensical report that patches its problem with big explosion . Those distraction might be enough for some people , particularly since this is the 11th film in the dealership , but just when the Fast movies should be get more focussed on ending , Fast X seems dead set on opening it up to more and more flaws .
Let us never blank out , the Fast and fierce franchise has always been about family . So the fact that Fast X is a movie where that mob rarely communicates or even shares the same setting like a shot feel off . And when the newly introduced scoundrel is reset the in force thing in the movie , that ’s an even bigger yield . Hopefully , the 11th ( or maybe even twelfth ) film can make this one search well in retrospect but , as it stands , Fast X is the forged Fast moving picture yet .
