Last night’sfantastic episodeof Star Trek : Discovery had a bunch going on — but one of the most rooter - pleasing events was a trip back to where Star Trek began over five decades ago with its legendary original pilot . But that expect institute back more than just a sealed planet .

“ If Memory Serves ” took Michael Burnham and her adoptive buddy Spock back to Talos IV — the alien world where most of “ The Cage , ” the scrapped pilot program for Star Trek , takes post . That did n’t just intend an confrontation with the psychic Talosians that call the world home , though . It meant work back a character not seen on Star Trek in ten : Vina , the lone survivor of the SS Columbia ’s clangor - landing on the world that Captain Pike falls in love with — and unfortunately lead on Talos IV when she elect to remain behind , while the Talosians psychically mask the grievous injury she endure .

Vina , in the first place play in “ The Cage ” ( and in archival footage used from it in the first season Trek sequence “ The Menagerie ” ) by Susan Oliver , was play by Melissa George throughout last nighttime ’s episode . speak toSyfy Wireabout the experience , she touched on how she wanted to limn a character that had not only been unseen on the series for so long , but interestingly how she wanted to set up Vina as more than just a fair sex tail her former beauty , but one that has ascertain herself in her own important theatrical role on Talos IV :

When you first see Vina with that perfect blond hair and that perfect blue eyeshadow , you think , ‘ Oh , she ’s a bit off with the fairies . ’ But she ’s really got such dignity and is in fact very strong and ground , ” George explain . “ So I decide I was perish to encompass being a cleaning woman , with all her beaut and the hair , and those high heels , and being easy in my own hide . And that ’s how I am in my own life , too . I think that women often get perceived in a certain mode . If you ’re ‘ too pretty , ’ you ’re perceived as maybe not being bright enough . So , no , she ’s not a victim . She ’s everything , this cleaning woman . She ’s clear a char in honey , too . So [ I ] determine to be well-fixed and hard with it .

George ’s portrayal of Vina did n’t just take building on the arc the type went through in “ The Cage”—it required run short back to the pilot in a more literal sense too , apparently , even recording over lines of Oliver ’s original dialogue so Discovery could immix the two voices together for some moment , connecting the same character despite the half - 100 between public presentation :

They did put some of my voice on top of hers to kind of meld the two together . I could n’t embolden her acting because so much has change the manner we act today . There ’s a different variety of inflection . But I want to watch it and pay homage to her and the way the character mat .

contribute that Discovery heralded its second time of year by announcing the arrival of familiar Trek faces likeCaptain Pike , Spock , and even the Enterprise’soriginal “ Number One”from “ The Cage , ” keeping Vina a arcanum until this episode air led to a jolly adorable surprisal last night — and it ’s cool to see just how much work George and the bunch behind the show put into bringing Vina back to life one more fourth dimension .
