Even though he ’s advance an Oscar and made a ton of hugely popular films , Danny Boylestill try out to make his new film , Yesterday . However , it was his selection to do so and a technique he memorize from a very unlikely informant .
“ That ’s something , really , I learned from Leonardo DiCaprio , ” Boyle told io9 on the phone this week . “ He was the great star in the reality at the sentence when we worked together [ on The Beach ] . But he said , ‘ Let me try out . Listen to me playing the part and see if this is something we should do together . ’ ”
Boyle was right away captivated by the idea of someone apparently qualified to do a line of work still feel a pauperization to demonstrate themselves to the originative team . So , when he was approached about Yesterday , Boyle did the same for screenwriter Richard Curtis .

“ I said to him ‘ lease me excuse to you what I will seek to do with the film and see if you care it because if you do n’t we should call it quits here , ’ ” Boyle said . “ With a author that ’s their babe . They just put [ years ] in and they imagined [ the film ] with such tenderness . Then somebody comes in and take the air all over it doing something that they never intended . They should know about that , really . ”
Yesterday is the story of Jack Malik ( Himesh Patel ) , a gifted immature musician who is going nowhere . That is , until he gets into a ugly accident after a worldwide blackout and wakes up in a domain where no one remember the Beatles … except him . He adjudicate to steal their songs to become an incredibly successful transcription artist , which in turn ruin his family relationship with his best friend Ellie ( Lily James . )

Among the idea Boyle pitch to Curtis was that the songs in the film had to be performed and seize live , on set .
“ I was terrify that the triviality of sound recording would animalize [ Himesh Patel ’s ] approach to the music . That we ’d lose something , ” Boyle said . “ Because he had an glide slope to the songs that made you question — shortly , evidently , because you ’re a rational person — the ownership of the songs . He ’d play the call and I ’d occasionally get draw into thinking it ’s his song . Then I think ‘ No it is n’t , cretin . It ’s Paul McCartney ’s song . ’ It ’s just a blink in prison term but , I recall , that ’s exactly what we ’ve got to keep . ”
But no one want to countenance Boyle do that . Everyone told him the payoff would n’t match up in editing . They told him there were well-fixed , safe ways to record the music . But for Boyle , this was non - negotiable .

“ I was absolutely adamant that every single strain would be recorded live , ” Boyle articulate . “ That was a howling challenge because it mean you are assign it all on the railway line [ with ] a performing artist . And with this kind of film , it should be on the line with the performing artist . Either he can do it or you ca n’t and you ’ll fall if he can’t — and hopefully , if he can , which I think he does , you will take the great unwashed with you on that journey . ”
That journeying would have been insufferable , of course , without the blessing of the Beatles . The necessary approval was grant early on — but , as Boyle explained , in a way that lined up with their unparalleled sense of humor and gave a glimpse into how peculiar this flick could be .
“ What I found really refreshing is that , in a time where plastic film research or exposing a back catalog are often done as biopics or life story stories , they gave the go - ahead to a film that was suppose their full disappearance , ” Boyle say . “ They literally are erase from the world ’s consciousness . I thought it ’s queer they ’ve approved that because it ’s a wonderful prism to see their songs through . You ’re not just hearing the song again … [it ] allow you to almost lose sight of the Beatles for a while . And then , of course , you get a greater understanding of what their value is . “

agree to Boyle , he sent the finished film to Ringo Starr , Paul McCartney , and the families of George Harrison and John Lennon . And while McCartney has n’t seen it yet ( though he bed the laggard and gave special permission to use “ Yesterday ” as the statute title ) , Boyle did hear from some of the others .
“ We had a lovely subject matter back from Ringo and Barbara and also one from Olivia , George ’s widow , ” Boyle suppose . “ Beautiful message . They were really special . ”
While that feedback was exceedingly electropositive , Boyle has had some less than positive feedback in recent days about some things he said in regards to women in film . When asked byThe Independentwhat he thinks about the fact that he ’s never made a motion-picture show with a woman as the track , he said , “ You plainly have a concern , specially now — and it ’s a acquire concern — where you do n’t want to [ make a female person - led film as a male director ] , because you ’d experience like an pretender . I surely reply to that . ” Many site , such asIndiewireandStylist , called him to job for the reaction .

When need to respond , and how he could work to hyperbolise women ’s voice , Boyle seemed keen to position the record straight .
It ’s something I ’m not best certified to do . I understand why my daughter is . My two daughter are and their mother is and other film maker are and we must further those movie maker to make those films . That ’s not to say manpower ca n’t make them , of course of instruction . you’re able to assay to but I think we have to acknowledge that over half the sky has not been given its proper stead in our [ film ] narratives . [ But ] I think thing are exchange . Definitely . I ’m ashamed of my deficiency of contribution to that . And I fully acknowledge that I would love to make a late change , if I could . So you ’re mindful of that and [ when ] one is aware of one ’s own limitation , that ’s an authoritative affair to say . Also … it would be very wrong to ideate that if I did change , I would make a big deviation . I think the big divergence has to come from themselves and I conceive it will begin to come out .
That ’s a complexresponse , to be sure , and its slightly mixed messages kind of mirror the complexness Boyle imagined for Yesterday . It ’s a film that ’s a “ what if ? ” wish - fulfillment fairy tale , a dear story , and an ode to probably the great banding of all sentence .

“ The moving picture is a double helix really , ” he say . “ A magical event combust a double helix and the two-fold helix is a love letter to the Beatles ’ music through this optical prism of having forget them , and a love letter from , weirdly , Ellie to Jack , who is so obsessed with belonging , with achieving in terms of his workplace , that he ignores the actual most important affair in his life , which is Ellie … and his despair when he begins to realize it may be too belated . ”
It ’s not too late to see Yesterday , though . It opens today , June 28 .
