Crape or crape ( Anglicized versions of the Fr . crêpe ) is a silk , wool , or polyester fabric of a gauzy texture , own a peculiar sharp or crimpy visual aspect . ( The Holy Writ crape is also used as an Anglicized spelling of crêpe ( pancake ) . )
Silk crape is woven of hard spun silk yarn in the gum or natural condition . There are two distinct varieties of the material : soft , Canton , or Oriental crape , and hard or crisped French pancake . Thin crêpe is squall crêpe de Chine ( “ Taiwanese crêpe ” ) .
The wavy show of Canton French pancake issue from the queer manner in which the weft is prepared , the yarn from two spool being twist together in the rearward style . A very successful caricature of real crape is made in Manchester of cotton yarn and sell under the name of Victoria crape .
