Astronaut John Glenn was one of the Mercury Seven , the first Americans trained for spacefaring . Before Glenn became the first American to orb the Earth in hisFriendship 7 missionon February 20 , 1962 , he run through a lot of breeding .
In the picture above , he practices for the Mercury commission in a space vehicle simulator , star determinedly at the roof while a NASA researcher tracks his every move . Below , he practices exercise in the Mercury Procedures Trainer at the Space Task Group , Langley Field , Virginia . The flight simulator was used to practice normal and emergency modal value of systems operations .
