When it came time to find an engagement ring forZooey Deschanel,Jonathan Scottknew exactly what he was looking for.
“She had mentioned it a while ago,” Scott, 45,tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s issue. “So when she had mentioned that this was a ring that she liked, I immediately screen grabbed that and held onto that for a long time — probably over a year. That was the one she got.”
The ring features multicolored stones laid out in a floral pattern, and it’s totally unique. Resembling a flower crown, the ring is outside the norm, and that’s just how Deschanel likes it.
“I didn’t want just a diamond ring,” she tells PEOPLE. “There’s just so many different beautiful gemstones. It’s fun to have something different. I mean, I love diamonds, don’t get me wrong. I’m not going to turn down a diamond. But I like the fun colors and I like pink and purple.”

The ring incorporates those colors Deschanel loves so much, with pink and purple sapphires and diamonds. Despite how much she loves it, though, she couldn’t wear it right away afterScott popped the question— because the ring didn’t fit quite right.
“It was big for me. I didn’t wear it,” Deschanel, 43, admits.
“I measured so badly,” theProperty Brothersstar adds. “So I said to the jeweler, I was like, ‘You know Zooey. What size?’ They’re like, ‘She is definitely a 6. She’s a 6.'”
Deschanel clarifies that the ring she was given was actually a 5.5. However, she’s neither a 6, nor a 5.5.
She’s a 4.75.
Nevertheless, the couple got the ring resized after Scott proposed in August in Scotland, and now Deschanel is happy to wear it all the time.

The couple first met in 2019 while filming an episode of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke with their siblings (which includedBonesactress Emily Deschanel).

After filming, the group of four went out to sing karaoke together in L.A. on their own, a source told PEOPLE at the time. “They were all talented and spontaneous and they had a really fun time shooting the show,” the source said. “They became friends after and then started talking as friends and realized there was more to it.”
They went Instagram official in October of that year and spent the COVID-19 pandemic together. A source told PEOPLE at the time that they “bonded over a shared love of music.”
“I’m not going to lie. I did not see this coming,” Scott tells PEOPLE of his relationship with Deschanel in this week’s cover story. “It’s amazing when you have someone who not only shares a lot of interests, but also I’ve never met anybody with master conflict resolution skills like this one over here. So actually, because it’s an important part of a relationship too, somebody who cares to make sure that you can get through the hard moments.”
“I’m so lucky,” Deschanel says in response. “I’m the luckiest.”
