Does our galaxy pith around a muckle of grim matter ? A unexampled depth psychology that examines the unwavering stream of Vasco da Gamma light beam that the Fermi Space Telescope has been picking up since its launch six years ago suggests that it might .
So , how did scientists issue forth to this conclusion ?
They start with a map , chart out the point where the radiation had been break up up and its intensity . Then , they simply subtract the radioactivity that they could account for using bonk sources — everything from pulsars to supernova remnants to cloud of interstellar gas .

But , after all that , they were still left with a mysterious patch of remaining radiation , spanning a space of over 5,000 light years from the galaxy centerfield and measure at between 1 and 3 billion negatron volts .
This mysterious patch can be made a deal less mysterious , though , with the addition of one factor : dark subject . Which , as currently theorized , could account for both the presence and orbit of the otherwise unexplained patch of radiation , as lead source of the study Dan Hooper of theFermilab explains :
The fresh maps allow us to analyze the excess and test whether more conventional account , such as the presence of undiscovered pulsars or cosmic - re collision on gas cloud , can calculate for it . The sign we find can not be explained by presently proposed alternatives and is in tightlipped agreement with the predictions of very simple colored subject models .

So , with all this , does this mean we in the end have the smoke gun that proves dark subject is at the nub of the Milky Way ?
Well , not quite . The finding — which are detailed in both a paper published inPhysical Review Dand a more recent crop paper up onArXiv — are , as yet , unconfirmed . Its possible that there is another unknown origin for the measured radiotherapy .
Still , the data point does make for what NASA foretell the “ strong slip to engagement ” that the sour topic scientist have long suspect lies at the centre of our beetleweed is really out there .
