io9 : Brian , tell us a little bit about the set - up for Defiance .

What ’s been your favorite part of play in the sandpile of a huge franchise like this ?
forest : It ’s all been very satisfying . I have two answers to your question : the first is mold with Tristan Jones . The 2nd is picture out the puzzle of helping to make a advanced risible book that is also a throwback to the original plastic film , in terms of manner , technology , and colour palette . A lot of that is obviously work with Tristan and our colorist Dan Jackson , but I spent a lot of time watching and thinking about the original plastic film , why it works so well , and adapt that to this projection here .
What ’s the biggest challenge in writing an effective Alien level ?
Wood : set Aliens in it ! What I stand for is , creating a serialized story that can run for 12 [ issues ] ( at a lower limit ) and keep that tension , that threat , and that fight for survival and sustain it . If you think about the films , the picture show are very finite : there are Aliens to kill and a path of leakage . Do that and you ’re done . With a serialized story , something has to be created to exert a steady menace over clip . It ’s a challenge , but a fun challenge .
What do you think it is about this world that draw it such perfect comic book cloth ?
Sir Henry Joseph Wood : I retrieve it ’s mode beyond just funnies . Aliens , in any form , just is that variety of storytelling that seems to be universal . It ’s such a primal thing . It ’s about care — fear of the iniquity , of the unknown , fearfulness of an unstoppable force play , a biological fear , a claustrophobic fear . But counterpoint with that is this mind that ordinary the great unwashed can rise up to gather those fear and overcome them . That knead for a 5 - year - old and a 75 - year - previous . Aliens has an iconic aesthetic . Was it hard to stylise and design the look of the ledger because of that while trying to deliver something visually refreshing in this conversant world , or was it something easy to embrace ?
Tristan Jones : The spirit was fairly leisurely to squeeze . It ’s hard for me because I ’m not a trained creative person . So I ’m absorb as much reference point material as I can , but I love a lot of the skill fiction that originate around the time of Alien , and it all as this lo - fi sci - fi look and feel — thing like 2001 , Silent Running , even the original Star Wars to an extent .
Another godsend was have the video games we have now — closing off and even the derided Colonial Marines , which basically let me move around the environments from the films and see what was what and get a good tone at all this stuff . The guys from Isolation have been really groovy about reference material too . They seem pretty happy that we ’re sort of reinforce stuff they set in motion while we tell our story , too , so it ’s great that everyone involve in building this universe is really in it together .
Did you feel beholden emulating the movies in your work , or was more of a fount of , “ Oh my God I ’m take out an Aliens book , a scene like that has to be in there ! ” ?
Jones : This I think is more from my own backcloth in photographic film and tv set , which was middling heavily driven by thing I ’d learned watch Alien . Framing sure things , fall things a certain mode — I suppose a deal of that comes from how I acquire to tell stories through bailiwick . But when that comes cheek - to - side with varlet - to - varlet storytelling of funny books there ’s a level of adaptation where you have to take what works and make it ferment another way .
That said , the filmic presentation of it is definitely much more on my mind , and I do n’t think it ’s so much an try at emulation , I just guess that there ’s decidedly a way that salute these things works well , and it ’s something Fincher did in Alien 3 without necessarily aping Scott , it ’s just a language in the telling of these tale . I ’m just doing my best to speak it properly ! So yeah , by all odds , certain shots should be in there , because that ’s the voice communication these matter speak , if that makes sense .
What is it that appeals the most about doing licensed comics ? What run you to Defiance as an artist specifically — beyond a love of the enfranchisement ?
Jones : Licensed comics gives you a chance to be imply in something that means a lot to you , plain , but also flex artistic muscles and challenge yourself , and good licensed gig — single that invoke to me most — do both . Mad Max was a vast challenge because it was basically 12 Angry Men . [ Ed . billet : Jones bring home the bacon art for DC ’s series of Fury Road tie - IN . ] Sure , it ’s Mad Max , and certain , I was bummed I never engender to suck Max or the Interceptor , but that world and those characters were interesting to me , and trying to make that laughable visually interesting , when it ’s literally 30 - something Thomas Nelson Page of people sing in the same way , was a Brobdingnagian challenge .
Aliens is a little different . Aliens is something I ’ve geared my entire life history towards work on . When Brian first approached me to cultivate with him , I think it was going to be something else entirely , but when he told me it was Aliens — beyond being on table immediately for the Aliens — the fact that he was writing it grabbed me directly away . And when a publisher has someone like Brian on a Word like that , you do it the newspaper publisher is behind this affair 100 % , so a lot of the time decisions regarding the appeal of a project prevarication in who else is involved and what you could draw from that . With Mad Max it was because George [ Miller ] , Nico [ Lathouris ] and Mark [ Sexton ] were all straight off involved , which overrode the fact that I would n’t be drawing what I identify as the things I loved instantly about Mad Max . It ’s similar with Aliens , except I get to pull all those things I love !
If there ’s one thing that you have n’t yet been capable to draw from across the whole Alien pantheon yet , what would you do it the most to get to draw for Defiance ?
Jones : Engineers . Right out the gate ! Or a piranha . I think with what we ’re doing with Defiance , there ’s plenty of room to do some capital things with both of those Guy down the route and really make them terrifying .
There are some enceinte biological questions Prometheus advance about the alien life Hz and the biota that I ’d hump to explore and see what that affects visually . What happens when a fraught woman is made host to the foreign larvae for example ? How does that biologically impact the creature it gives birth to ? I witness the estimate of ballock - morphing ( something Scott had reinserted into the director ’s cutting of Alien ) genuinely horrifying , and there ’s something I suggested to Brian that I ’m go for we can do , because that will be as fun to draw as it will be antic . Those “ Working Joe ” android are the creepy things to come to that universe since the Alien itself and unhinged fun to describe , so more of them ! MORE !
